“You will never understand what it means to be fat.” With those words, grad student Robbie Smith begins the Fat-Like-Me project. In order to support her thesis, she puts on a fat suit to measure people’s reactions to the new her.

Accused of embezzling funds, Professor Jake Proctor returns home to spend quality time with the only father he has ever known. There, he meets an intriguing overweight woman who reminds him of his late grandmother. She’s witty, charming, and cares deeply for those around her, including his dying grandfather.

When Robbie meets Jake while she’s in disguise, she deceives him for all the right reasons. But how long can she maintain the deception before Jake discovers that she is not who he believes her to be?

Excerpt

Robbie in her disguise meets Jake Proctor for the first time and there are not good impressions shared.

“Robbie’s cheeks burned. “You, you think I’m asking Frank for money?” She forced herself to stand straight and gripped her hands so she wouldn’t brush at the dirt clinging to the front of her jacket and kept both feet on the ground so she wouldn’t kick him in the shins. These solid shoes would give him a good bruise.

“For starters, you look as if you could use some clean clothes. There’s bread on the bench. And there’s the open wallet and a frail, old, man.” His clipped words and flashing eyes when he nodded toward each item left no room for doubt as to exactly what he thought.

Struggling between her outrage and the genuine concern in Jake’s eyes, she said, “Ah, Sherlock Holmes, I presume.” Nincompoop. Just goes to show a well-fitted jacket and height can disguise real character, too.

“No.” He put his hands behind his back and jutted his chin forward. “I’m a concerned grandson.”

“Stop it, both of you,” Frank growled. “Here’s the picture of Mabel I wanted to show you before Jake turned up out of the blue.” He handed his billfold to Robbie. Behind yellowed plastic was the image of a woman with dark curls smiling at the camera holding a baby wrapped in a blanket.

“That’s our Mabel.” He looked from Jake to Robbie.

“Yes.” Jake stood behind Frank and his hands hung loosely at his side.

Robbie felt a sense of relief. She turned toward Jake and pointed at the baby. “You?”

“No.” Jake sounded resigned. Robbie understood that sometimes a person just has to allow the story to be told.”

My Review

Woman of Substance is a love story that takes the premise of walking in another’s shoes to a whole new level. Annette Bower does an excellent job of crafting a creative storyline filled with humor, compassion, and love. She takes a sensitive subject that plagues many women and transforms it with taste and style into an entertaining love story that will have you rooting for the protagonists’ happily ever after.

As you follow Robbie’s journey in supporting her thesis, you find yourself commiserating with her as she tries to determine her course of action in resolving her dilemma with Jake. The ups and downs will keep you glued to the pages as you eagerly read to the end. The characters are well-drawn and engaging, and the writing flowed smoothly. Even though the story included an element of sadness as it dealt with the death of a loved one, it was handled with finesse and grace and did not impede the romance of the story.

I found this love story to be a thoroughly enjoyable read that held my attention from beginning to end, and one that you definitely don’t want to miss.

Thank you for posting your review on your wordpress blog. Thank you for stating in your review that Robbie and Jake and the other characters are well drawn and engaging. Yes it is a sensitive topic and yes there is sadness but you recognize that it does not impede the romance of Woman of Substance.
I look forward to your followers commenting today.

  1. Great review, Janna. Congrats, Annette!

    • Good morning Anne Montclair,
I agree that Janna reviewed Woman of Substance with care and attention. It helps me as an author confirm that the tools and talents I employed and the keen eye of my editor have achieved my goal of sensitivity and humor to a topic of body size, loss and love.
      Yours truly,
      Annette

  3. Dear Parisfanca,
Thank you for stopping by and commenting on Janna’s review. I enjoy that she “found this love story to be a thoroughly enjoyable read that held my attention from beginning to end, and one that you definitely don’t want to miss.”
Janna and I appreciate your comments.

  4. Shannon says:

Thanks for the great review. I was worried a story with a fat suit might be insensitive toward larger women but it sounds like it done well as more learning about walking in someone else’s shoes. Thanks for sharing

    • Hello Shannon,
I agree that Janna Shay provided a well balanced review. She did point out that I met my goal of treating the experience with sensitivity. Many, many years ago as a young woman at a restaurant with booths, one of my friends called, “All the skinnies on one side.” I was not on that side. As you can see it still does sting. Amazing isn’t it?
      Yours truly,
      Annette

    • jannashay says:

You’re welcome, and thank you for your kind words. As I stated in my review, Annette wrote about a sensitive subject with grace and finesse. Her writing talent is evident.

  5. Gala says:

I love journals but mostly do my writing on my computer. How about you, are you still using a paper notebook for notes or writing stories down?

    galaschick78 at gmail dot com

    • Hello Gala,
I own journals but like you most of my writing is on my computer but when I am struggling through a scene or have a new idea, I still reach for my pen and paper. The muscle movement over the page seems to connect to create differently. There is one drawback though, the spelling has declined because I don’t have the little red line squiggle under the word.
Thank you for stopping by and commenting on Janna Sahy’s review of Woman of Substance and asking about my writing habit.
      Yours truly,
      Annette

  6. Rita Wray says:

OI really enjoyed the excerpt. You have to be pleased with the great review.

    • jannashay says:

Thank you for stopping by. If you haven’t had a chance to read Woman of Substance, I recommend that you do. You won’t be disappointed.

    • Hello MomJane,
You are absolutely right, I am pleased with Janna Shay’s review. When I click through to the review I always do so with some hesitation. I know what I hoped to do with a story but when a reviewer points out that they felt I succeeded, I am relieved and glad. I know then that my readers will have a good experience. I had a wonderful editor for Woman of Substance and she helped me add more depth to the story.
Thank you for stopping by and commenting.
      Yours truly,
      Annette

  8. Jibriel says:

Love the excerpt and the fabulous review! Do you have a favorite author whom you admire?

    jibriel.o(at)web(dot)de

  9. Dear Jibriel,
Thank you for dropping by Janna Shay’s review of Woman of Substance. Aren’t you pleased that we do not have to prove we are not robots? It is such a pleasure to add comments and not try to squint through the squiggles and numbers.
A favorite author is Mary Balogh. She is a New York best selling author. She writes in the Regency period however her characters’ motivations and development can be paralleled to our contemporary time.
    Yours truly,
    Annette

  10. Ami says:

    Hi,
could you imagine to turn your book in an audiobook as well?

    shadowrunner1987(AT)gmail(DOT)com

    • Hello Ami,
That is a very good suggestion. I will have to check my contract and see if Soul Mate Publishing has the rights or if I do. I know that I would certainly hire a professional reader. I listened to many audio books when I used to drive the highway to and from work.
Thank you for stopping by Janna Shay’s review of Woman of Substance.
      Yours truly,
      Annette
